ModeratorDear Jurgen
Thanks for passing me this request on behalf of the group. I’ve got in touch with your Tutor and please feel free to discuss with him today the date that suits everybody. There is an option to have a session on Wednesdays starting from 20th November, because by this time, you won’t have any modules on Wednesdays.
Please discuss today with your tutor and let me know, so I can provide the group with a session link, etc.
Best regards

ModeratorHi all
A really big thank you for all your enthusiasm and posting some great ideas in reply to this forum post. I have also now caught up on some of the later posts that were sent as ‘new topics’ and not linked to this thread.
Keep up all the motivation, collaboration and good positive energy.

ModeratorHello Marilyn
Lots of good ideas here. I’ve heard a lot about Marsaxlokk, especially the fish market. I have been meaning to visit.

ModeratorHi Yanika
I did drive a little around that area on the ‘hop on n off’ bus. I really is beautiful. I can wait to do a little more adventuring. Interesting you mention ‘local wildlife’. What is some of the local wildlife in Malta.
Great to hear about how this old landfill space has been put to good green use.
Cheers

ModeratorHi Mauro
I couldn’t agree with you more. We have becomes such a wasteful generation. Instead of getting something fixed, we throw it out and buy a new one. I was shocked when I discovered the term e-waste and how much we create. Not to mention the harmful effects to nature and good health.
Building are the same. At the very least we could re-use the bricks of stone.

ModeratorDear Elisa
I can understand your concerns about a ‘sense of abandonment’ and agree that greenery does need some looking after. I’ve been reading quite a bit about ‘community’ gardens lately. Spaces in towns that are either sponsored (financially) by companies or organisations in the area or who actually take care of the space themselves.
I love the idea of vertical gardens, or green walls. A student of mine did her whole essay on the development of these and in my last university we had a moss wall in the canteen. It was amazing.
Great ideas and thanks for sharing.
Andy
PS. I’ve never been to Sicily and hope to visit soon.Polina Sedova
ModeratorHello Kieren
Once again some good ideas being put forward here. Do you think Malta could survive entirely on Solar energy? Happy to read about another person who likes trees. Thanks for your contribution.

ModeratorHello Jurgen
HHHmmm, I can remember working in China, early in 2001 and I first saw e-bikes. The batteries were so big, the bikes were so heavy and I felt so sorry for someone, who had run out of charge and was trying to peddle home. They have changed so much since then. I was super impressed in Almaty, Kazakhstan which has three different companies that have e-bike parked all over town and which work with an app on your phone. There were two other companies that has electric scooters. Almaty has lots of roads that have dedicated cycle and scooter lanes. This was great in Summer but, in winter it was another story.
This looks like a well planned and thought out piece of writing.

Great to see some in-text references with striking facts and figures. This kind of information makes for a good ‘hook’! A term we use to talk about the kind of information we use in a good introductory paragraph to grab your readers attention and make them want to read more. Good stuff! ????
You have also used information from your reading well to provide evidence of what you are writing about … Yay!
Do you think dedicated bus lanes might work.

ModeratorHi Mariah.
Lovely to read about such a strong, long family heritage and ties to a specific town. I fully understand the frustration of transport in Malta and how important planning and having a good public transport infrastructure is. To be honest, I am really surprised at how well it does work. I know it’s not perfect and there’s always room for improvement but, I’m impressed!
I chose to live in Mosta, close to the Rotunda because of the number of busses, routes and bus stops. However, on a good morning or evening my journey is about 15-20 minutes but on a bad day it has taken over an hour ????!
Some interesting reading on this comes from the UN SDGs, specifically goals 9 and 11.
Andy.
PS. No worries ???? about posting twice, we’re all learning how to use our new LMS.Polina Sedova
ModeratorHi Teodora.
I’ve had my eyes on Malta for a long time as an option to live, work, wind down and (hopefully) retire in. For me, it had a lot to do with the incredible Mediterranean climate, coastline, and yes, the clean clear skies and fresh air.
Having lived in cities like Beijing, I know just how bad air quality caused by industry and transport can be. So I welcome any ideas to reduce car use. Although I don’t think I could cycle around much anymore, i absolutely loved renting an electric scooter ???? and zooming around Almaty, through the city and parks at 60!
Thanks for your suggestions.
Andy.

ModeratorGood ???? morning Andrew.
Zabbar, sounds amazing. I’ll have to plan a visit soon. Malta has some beautiful old buildings and homes. It was one of the first things I noticed. It is sad to see so many of them in disrepair and left vacant. With a growing population and prices to buy a new home there must be something that can be done. Is it really cheaper to pull something down and build new?
It is interesting that you bring up the idea of ‘old’ trades, cobbling and carpentry. Do you think these are sustainable and viable options for young people to be learning nowadays?
Thanks for sharing your ideas and making a good contribution to this thread.
See you next week.
Andy.
PS. I had no idea Malta had a woman president! Gender equality in politics is still such a hot topic.Polina Sedova
ModeratorMorning Jake
lol! I’m actually reading and replying to you from Attard now! Am I right in saying Attard is one of the ‘three sleepy villages’? It’s also got one of my many favourite breakfast cafes, Jalies. I enjoy going to T’Qali market but agree the traffic is crazy. Anything we can do to get people out of their cars, makes sense to me. But, I confess, when I’ve had a car, I’m guilty too.

ModeratorOh Michael. Happy to say I was introduced to the Three cities by a good Maltese friend of mine and now visit as often as I can. Like the idea of swapping 4 wheels for 2.
I really appreciated the humorous ending and the SUV TANK analogy. -
