Hello and good morning.
I hope you all enjoyed and found our first session for the Academic and Business English module interesting, engaging and informative. Thank you all for working so well together in the breakout rooms, for being willing to share , collaborate and make valuable contributions. I appreciated how well you managed the online Zoom environment, raising your virtual hands, keeping your cameras on, for volunteering answers and helping to keep a large online group orderly and functioning well.
Some key points, I think you might want to think about and go over again.
Look at Slide 13 and make sure you’re happy with your understanding of the main differences between Academic and Business writing.
The Task from Academic Writing for International Students of Business (Pages 3 – 9) will also help you to understand this a little more and go into more detail too. Make sure you keep a copy of this work as it is the first entry of your Portfolio.
Regarding vocabulary, as I am sure that over the next three years of study, you are going to encounter many new English words. Some of these will be useful for general day to day life, others will be really good academic or business vocabulary and some will be subject specific terms of ‘jargon’. As I said there are three really good online LEARNER dictionaries by Oxford, Cambridge and Macmillan.
I also said there was something called the Academic Word List (AWL) to find out a little more about these lists have a look at this website. https://www.eapfoundation.com/vocab/academic/
See you all next week.
Andy.
