Hello all.
Hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend. I sat drafting this message at a lovely street cafe in Valletta this afternoon.
Thank you for getting into your groups so quickly and for sharing this information with me via the chat.
I’m sure some of you might be a little nervous and not feeling too confident about this. Don’t worry, you’re not alone, many of my learners in different countries have all felt the same. The key to being a little more confident and relaxed is all about planning and being well prepared.
So let’s go!
1. Arrange yourselves into groups.
2. Decide together which topic you’re going to present.
3. Brainstorm some ideas together.
4. Put your ideas into a logical order.
5. Plan an outline of your presentation. Remember, a good presentation needs a good introduction, the body (main part), a conclusion and time for Q&A.
6. Divide the outline into sections, one section for each person in the group.
7. Go online and do some research about what makes a good academic presentation.
8. Start work on your presentation. Write a script, including highlighted transitions and signposts.
9. Turn your script into 1 – 3 visuals. (Ppt, Google slides).
10. Turn your script into small A5 size notes. Little flip cards, with key words and important information.
11. Practise, practise and practise again. Get your family, friends or work colleagues to listen. Ask for advice. Video yourself and watch it, reflect (don’t be too harsh on yourself).
12. Do a ‘dry run’ presentation with everyone in your group. Check your time. Make changes.
13. Someone collects the visuals and puts them together in the right order and finalises them and submits them 3 days before the 9 October.
14. Get relaxed, calm down and enjoy listening to the other groups do their presentations.Here are 2 really good websites that I often use and refer learners to for help on anything to do with Academic English. Make sure to download the Signposts and Transitions infographics.

A really good introduction needs
A hook! 🪝 an interesting fact, figure or statement that grabs the audience’s attention.
Introduce yourself (your group)
An overview (summary of the key points) this is called signposting
Time – how long is your presentation
Time for Q&A at the end
A transition – a way of saying your time is finished and hand over the next speaker.
Think about where and when you could include a good signpost or transition.
Remember to smile, look 👀 at your audience, make eye contact, stress important words, use gestures and hand signals (especially to point to something on your slide) and don’t forget to BREATH.Try and not read your script. This means you’re not looking at your audience, affects your fluency, pronunciation and voice (it can become monotonous!)
Try and relax and enjoy the experience.
On the day of the presentations, you will be listening to the other groups and completing a ‘peer feedback form’ for each group. Please try your best to be 100% ready and not use this time for last minute planning. Having a feedback form helps you to focus on the same kind of criteria we use for marking. After you’ve completed your presentations you will also complete a group reflection.

One more quick thing, pictures on your slides should be Royalty free. Look at websites like Canva (requires a subscription but but use the free version) or Free Pik. Images or diagrams from websites you used for research must be referenced (the URL under the image in small font). You last slide should be a reference list of the different sources you have used in your presentation. Do so research on how to add research into a presentation.

I will do my very best to leave about 30 minutes in our session this Wednesday for you to work in your presentation groups and do a little more planning for Saturday.
I’m sure you have all got your own plan already, but if not there’s a word document attached below you could use. I will go over it with you on Wednesday evening.
