Introduction – What are cookies?

A cookie is a small file of letters and numbers that is stored on your browser or the hard drive of your computer as you are browsing, if you, as the user, agree. Cookies contain information that is transferred to your computer’s hard drive. A cookie enables the Website to remember users that have already visited and provides capabilities that make the web much easier to navigate. They are used because they provide a better user experience. Without a cookie, every time you open a new web page, the server where that page is stored will treat you like a completely new visitor. Cookies allow a website to remember choices you have made in the past and your preferences, like what language you prefer, what region you would like weather reports for, and others, and allow you to complete tasks without having to re-enter your information when browsing.

Normally, cookies contain the name of the website that the cookie originated from, the lifetime/duration of the cookie as well as a randomly generated unique number. To ensure that you are recognised when you visit the website again for the purposes outlined above, websites can use this code while you move from page to page within one website. In this manner, any information you have entered previously is remembered.

Types of Cookies

There are different ways of classifying cookies. This section will explain the main different types of cookies. Do note that not all of these types of cookies are collected through our Website. The purpose of this section is limitedly to provide you with clear information about each type.  The section also does not purport to provide a comprehensive and detailed description of every different type of cookie which may be used on the internet.

Session cookies – Session cookies are temporary cookies that remain in the cookie folder on your hard disk until you close your browser, or once your session ends.

Persistent cookies – Persistent cookies last much longer than session cookies as they remain on your hard disk until their preset lifetime expires or until they are removed or erased, depending on the cookie’s expiration date.

First party cookies – These cookies are put on your device directly by the website you are visiting.

Third party cookies – These cookies are placed not by the website you are visiting by a third party like an advertiser or an analytic system.

Strictly necessary cookies – These cookies are essential for you to browse the website and use its features, such as accessing secure areas of the site, or as operational cookies, meaning that they must be included in order for certain web pages to function. Cookies that allow web shops to hold your items in your cart while you are shopping online are an example of strictly necessary cookies. These cookies will generally be first-party session cookies.

Preferences cookies – Also known as “functionality cookies,” these cookies allow the website to remember choices you have made in the past, like what language you prefer, or what your user name and password are so you can automatically log in, amongst others.

Statistics cookies – Also known as “performance cookies,” these cookies collect information about how you use a website, like which pages you visited and which links you clicked on. None of this information can be used to identify you. It is all aggregated and, therefore, anonymized. The sole purpose of these cookies is to improve website functions.

Marketing cookies – These cookies track your online activity to help advertisers deliver more relevant advertising or to limit how many times you see an ad. These cookies can share that information with other organizations or advertisers. These are persistent cookies and almost always of third-party provenance.

These are the main ways of classifying cookies. Not all of these types of cookies are collected on our website. Our Website does not collect … (TBC).
