The Diploma in Business and Management programme is designed for professionals in employment who can be in various roles of responsibility (such as, but not limited to, managerial or supervisory positions) as well as aspiring managers, team leaders and owners of small businesses.
The ATHE Level 5 Diploma in Business and Management offered by Malta Business School aims to provide you with the right tools to progress in your career. This 10-month programme is specifically designed to help you achieve a quality qualification in a relatively short period of time and get immediate results in your career.
This Management Programme is structured in a way that shows you how business theory can be applied into practical aspects at your work. While academic theory is important, we ensure that you will be gaining hands-on skills which are transferable and applicable to your dynamic working environment. Consisting of a core selection of fundamental management subjects, the programme facilitates the development of key managerial skills and looks at your holistic development.
Tutors
Our tutors have excellent experience within their field of expertise as well as the necessary academic background. You will receive high quality face-to-face presentations delivered in a participative environment. You will be engaged in discussions, activities, case studies, presentations and group work creating a bond between you and other students that forges friendships and a new network of professionals.
Assessment
There are no exams within this programme. The method of assessment to attain the qualification is based on writing assignments which are based on practical situations from your organisation and customised to your working environment. You will be guided on how to write assignments, how to carry out analysis and how to identify recommendations that influence and implement positive change at the workplace. The assignment brief is available to you from very early on in your studies. In this way, you can organise and plan your study time accordingly week by week. You are also given the opportunity to submit a draft write-up and get personalised feedback prior to submitting your final assignment.
Classes/ Mode of Study
You would need to attend classes in the evening during each 5-month semester period. The classic study route for students is twice weekly classes over a period of two semesters (10 months) from 5.30pm till 8.00pm.
Progression Opportunities
The Diploma in Business and Management is a Level 5 Qualification on the MQF/EQF. It is UK Accredited programme awarded by Malta Business School and ATHE (Awards for Training and Higher Education). Upon successful completion of the programme, you will have the opportunity to follow progression routes to further pursue your studies.
This qualification is designed for learners who are seeking to enhance their job prospects in a range of industries and functions. The programme includes a core selection of fundamental management subjects such as Human Resources, Finance and International Business. The programme aims to develop key management skills.
Required:
- Minimum 18 years of age
- B2 level of English achieved in the last 5 years (English Language O’level grade 5+ or IELTS 5.5+ or MBS proficiency test)
And either:
- 2 years full-time relevant work experience with a level of responsibility (example: team leader, senior administrator, co-ordinator, supervisor, executive, manager etc.)
or
- Level 4 qualification in a related area or three MQF/EQF Level 4 individual single subject qualifications
Unit 1 – Managing Communication
This unit aims to develop your knowledge and understanding of how communication takes place within and between different organisations you are in contact with. It will also highlight the potential pitfalls and the benefits of good communication practice.
- Understand channels of communication within and between organisations and their effectiveness
- Be able to assess the factors that impact on workplace communication
- Be able to demonstrate the effective use of own communication skills within the workplace
Unit 2 – People Management
In this unit you will develop the knowledge and understanding of what motivates individuals and teams and use this to review people management strategies used in your organisations. You will gain an understanding of leadership theories, motivational theories, the impact of structure and culture as well as other tools that can be used to empower people in the workplace.
- Understand how structure, culture and other factors impact on people in organisations
- Understand how to manage individuals and teams in order to achieve sustainable business performance

- Be able to review people management strategies in an organisation
Unit 3 – Finance for Managers
This unit aims to introduce you to practical accounting and financial techniques that are useful to your business setup.
- Understand the sources of finance available to organisations
- Be able to assess an organisation’s financial performance
- Be able to use costing methods to make informed organisational decisions
Unit 4 – Business Organisations in a Global Context
This unit aims to develop your understanding of the issues and opportunities organisations face when operating within a global context.
- Understand differences in global business operations
- Understand the impact of external factors on global business organisations
- Understand the impact of globalisation on the internal operations of organisations
- Be able to review current issues that impact on business activities of a specified country
